Spring 2013 kickball season theme nights!

For those that don’t know what this is, it’s dressing up according to what theme it is for that week and having fun playing kickball while in costume. Our Field Monitors and the bartenders at Slices’ will be helping judge the best themed teams throughout the season, so those are the peeps you want to impress! Best themed team for each night will win a 1/4 barrel party for their team, to be redeemed at the end of the season. Have fun and good luck!

Here are the themes for the Spring season….

<del>April 23rd & 25th – Rain gear (very fitting for how this year started)</del>
<del>April 30th & 2nd – May flowers (bring out your inner hippie and/or flower power)</del>
<del>May 7th & 9th – Cinco de Mayo week (anything and everything Mexican)</del>
<del>May 14th & 16th – Mothers Day week (show Mom how much you love her by dressing up like her, yes, that means the guys also!)</del>
May 21st & 23rd – Duct tape week (what can you make out of duct tape?)
May 28th & 30th – Memorial Day celebration week (remember the men and women who died while serving their country and giving us the freedom to play this childhood game we love so much)
June 4th & 6th – Redneck/white trash week (have fun ya’ll!)
June 11th & 13th – Flag Day week (dress in the colors of your favorite flag)
June 18th & 20th – Fathers Day week (show Dad how much you care by dressing up like him, yes, that means your ladies!)

Don’t forget to end your kickball night by visiting our sponsor bar, Slices’ Bar and Grill, located across the street from field #2 on Pennsylvania. They offer free appetizers, a pitcher race and kickballer drink specials throughout the season.

In a pretty large update to the MUSA website this week, our friends at Bracketpal have added the ability to create a Player Profile as well as add your name to a Sub List if you feel like testing the Free Agent Market. The demo video below explains how to use it and only takes a few minutes. You might want to turn the volume up because it is a bit soft or you can just read the brief summaries below.
*please note that the MUSA Basketball Gold (stats) league is still currently using the HomeTeamsOnline site for it’s stats.

Player Profile

It’s super easy to create a player profile and have the current and past season info right at your finger tips or mouse clicks. If your captain is slacking and hasn’t added you to the team roster yet, be sure to send them friendly reminders. Captains must first add players to teams before they show up for that season. Ideally rosters would carry over season to season cutting down on redundant work but that functionality might be for another update down the road. I have been told by the owner of Bracketpal that there’s a plan to make a “request to be on roster” function where all the captain would have to do is approve the request instead of typing player names, but no word on when that update will be released.

Don’t forget to upload an action shot of you doing what you do best.. whether it’s at the bar or at the field/court/course.

Sub List

The individual profile might come in handy if and when you feel like lending your services out on the newly created Sub List or… Free Agent Market as I like to refer to it. No matter what skill level, if you need a team this is the place to throw your hat into the ring. We’ve created full teams out of subs lists in the past and if we can do that again we will. We want as many people enjoying the MUSA experience as possible.
This just doesn’t have to be about the players either. Captains, if you’re looking for players it might be a good idea to check out the Sub List. No commitment necessary. You can easily filter your search to easily match your needs. Maybe you need someone to fill in for just one game… maybe it’s the whole season because you and your girlfriend broke up and now your team is short a female. Don’t take that Ghost Out or forfeit… use the Sub List.

As Winter continues it’s never-ending grip on the Milwaukee area, we have lots to go over since most of our Winter sports wrapped up or are wrapping up this week. We even had a celebrity visit to one of our basketball championships.

Arena Kickball

Arena Kickball Champions – The Legion

The Arena Kickball league ended on the 14th of March so this is a long time coming, but congratulations goes out to The Legion for winning the 2013 Arena Kickball League. The Legion went 8-0 this season and defeated long time rival Tastes Like Chicken in the championship 5-4.

Thanks to all the teams that played this season and we look forward to hosing another great Arena Kickball league next Winter.

Winter Basketball

2013 MUSA Winter Basketball Champions – Dynasty

I’ll first start with our Tosa stats league at St Bernard’s where Dynasty edged out Colonel Hart’s 45-42 to claim their first MUSA Basketball title since 2008 when they were known as High Octane. Colonel Hart’s beat We Don’t Pass 38-34 in the semi-final game to meet up with #1 seed Dynasty in the final.

Neither team shot the ball all that well, but it was Dynasty’s 50% shooting inside the arc that proved to be the difference. Colonel Hart’s out rebounded Dynasty 24-20 and Jason Jackson from Dynasty lead all scorers with 14 points.

The Spring season will see if Colonel hart’s can make it back to the championship as Dynasty decided to take the season off. Congratulations once again Dynasty for winning the 2013 MUSA Basketball Championship at St Bernard’s.

Coach Dan & Brandon Jennings

Greenfield High School gets a little more publicity this time around because one, I was there and two, Milwaukee Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings decided to drop by and watch the championship. Don’t ask me why, but rumor is, he knows someone on the Wisconsin Together team. Whatever the reason, he walked away disappointed from this one as Midwest Swing ended up defeating Wisconsin Together 81-77.

This rematch was highly anticipated since the two teams battled it out to a week 4 overtime thriller that had Wisconsin Together on top 61-56 and was the only real challenge to the undefeated Wisconsin Together team all season. Until the championship game.

2013 MUSA Winter Basketball Champions – Midwest Swing

Midwest Swing came out on fire and drained the first few 3-pointers and got out to a 12-2 lead and really never looked back. Both teams shot the ball rather well, but the overall reason Midwest Swing won was because of their tenacious defense and not allowing Wisconsin Together to get off open looks. Leave this team open and you’ll pay, but Midwest Swing was able to close the gaps and really pressure Wisconsin Together into some contested shots. It also didn’t hurt Midwest Swing was grabbing rebounds like they were going out of style keeping WT to a lot of one and done possessions.

Congratulations to Midwest Swing for winning the 2013 Winter basketball league at Greenfield High School.

Winter Dodgeball

Dodgeball Champions – Big Ego… Tiny Klug

The Winter Dodgeball League wraps up this week Tuesday at Edgewood Elementary. League champion Big Egos… Tiny Klug beat out Pants Candy last week in an epic battle for dodgeball supremacy and only dropped 1 point all season crowning themselves Dodgeball champions. Both teams distanced themselves from the rest of the league early in the season and were definitely the teams to beat throughout, but Big Ego… Tiny Klug came out on top. I hope to see more dodgeball teams next season and hope someone will be ready to step up to take down either one of these veteran teams or just come out and have a great time like all the teams in the league this year.

Thanks to all the teams that played in our Winter leagues and I’m looking forward to more exciting seasons to come!

Congratulations goes to the Basket Brawlers for winning the 2012 MUSA Fall 2 Basketball League at St. Bernard’s in Tosa. In another close game with the Monstars, the Brawlers were able to pull out the 71-70 victory and take home their 2nd Championship in a row.

In the semi-finals, #2 seed Monstars were able to dispatch #3 seed Dynasty 42-40. Monstars Quentin Barfield lead all scorers with 14 and Kris Alpers from Dynasty grabbed 9 boards in the losing effort. With the win, that advanced Monstars to the final to face Basket Brawlers for the 2nd championship in a row. The Brawlers defeated Monstars in the 2012 Fall season championship 81-79 to win their first MUSA basketball title.

This season proved to be no different. In another epic championship the Basket Brawlers were able to defeat Monstars 71-70 and secure their 2nd championship in a row. Marty Collins from the Brawlers lead all players with 20 while Logan Frami from Monstars went 6-6 from the floor while grabbing 12 rebounds. Congrats Basket Brawlers and all teams that played in the 2012 Fall II Basketball League.

Congratulations to the Fall 2012 Golden Lunchbox winners, Blue Balls.

Fall 2012 Golden Lunchbox Champions: Blue Balls

Blue Balls defeated Fall 2012 Silver Thermos winners Vandelay Players Club 3-0 in the championship game on Saturday after beating Quis Quoss (MN) 5-2, 50 Shades of Ray 9-0, Prestige Worldwide 6-4, and Sport & Wood 4-0. Both teams didn’t have much trouble getting players on, the struggle was to get runners across the plate. The only real threat was in the 2nd inning when Blue Balls had bases loaded and 1 out. The next 2 kickers were not able to kick anyone in and the score remained 0-0 until Blue Balls broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 7th. A few timely kicks to get runners on followed by a couple errors and Vandelay Players Club found themselves down 3-0 and were never able to rally in the 8th or 9th. Blue Balls who won the Silver Thermos in the Spring grabs their first Golden Lunchbox in franchise history and a very well played tournament, scoring 27 and allowing 6. Not a bad kickball year for captain Jared Amann, A Silver Thermos in the spring, a Mr. Premium title for Premium Draft kickball, and now a Golden Lunchbox. All downhill from here?

But before all that …

On Thursday, O’Brien’s hosted the 25th Golden Lunchbox Selection Show. Top seed Rec Hazard selected the Northeast Bracket (Wick #2), Mr. Roger’s Neighborhoodlums scored the Southwest (Wick #5), Blue Balls landed in the South (Wick 4), and SuperDudes snatched up the Midwest (Wick #3). The next 12 teams picked their spot on the board and the brackets started filling out nicely. After the 16 teams picked their first round bye slots, the remaining balls were dropped into the bucket including the “Golden Ball”. The team that picks this gem gets to pick their path to the Lunchbox by bouncing a team from their spot and Evil Monkees with the 38th pick struck gold. They bounced Club G’s from the 12pm game on Wick #5, pitting themselves against Friend With Benefits. Their efforts didn’t pay off though; FWB bounced Evil Monkees from the tournament with a 14-2 crushing and thwarting any run the Monkees might have had. Golden Ball wasted.

- Complete Bracket -

Happy Tourney Day

Mostly cloudy and upper-30′s set the stage for the early morning games and teams came prepared setting up their “camp” areas, preparing for what they hoped would be long day of kickball. I remember talking to one player who claimed “I look forward to this day more than Christmas.” Lots of great action and memories throughout the day including a few that I remember …

1. The 11:15 game between Prestige Worldwide vs. Pour Me Another went 11 innings and was playing 6 vs. 6 before PWW kicked in the winning run in the bottom of 11 on a sacrifice fly to left. PWW had bases loaded and no outs the inning before and failed to score.

2. The 3:00pm game between RBV and Suck My Kick. RBV was down by 2 heading into the bottom of the 7th. They were able to plate 2 and win the game in walk-off fashion.

3. The 2:15 game between Fecal Matters vs. SuperDudes. Not sure on the details but heard it was an interesting game and almost a big upset.

4. More of a lowlight than a highlight, 2 players from Prestige Worldwide earned trips to the ER in back to back games. Sprained foot and a dislocated shoulder. Heal up fellas!

5. The sun did come out eventually and made for very pleasant afternoon games.

6. The sister of Hall of Famer Al Gardner had a cake made that looked like our Screamer logo ball.

Add any notable things you saw on our Facebook page.

Remember, there can only be one Golden Lunchbox winner and if your team wasn’t fortunate enough to hoist the beloved trophy and drink from its golden glory, then I hope you found a smaller victory in something else that day.

Hall of Fame

At the Bash, hosted at Rounding Third, Da Commish got up and announced the inductees for the Hall of Fame in hos normal drunken jibberish. Anthony Rodriguez was the first inductee to the Class of 2012 followed by longtime legend Jeff Schmidt. You will be able to check out their stories at the Hall of Fame once the curator gets them up this week. I was also enshrined into the Hall of Fame and although it is an honor, it’s a bit weird putting someone that runs the league into it’s own HOF. I do appreciate the sentiment though.

Have a great off-season everyone… unless you’re playing Arena Kickball. Then I will see you in January!

Thank You

I also want to thank everyone that makes this day possible. Lots of people jumping in and helping to ump when asked, field monitors, photographers, and all other helpers. Without people like you this league wouldn’t be what it is today, so THANK YOU again!

Not so new to the league, but new to the winner circle, MUSA saw two new champions crowned on Sunday October 21st for the Fall 2012 basketball season. Both champions from last season made the finals, but both fell short paving the way for Basket Brawlers in Tosa and God’s Favor in Greenfield.

Fall 2012 Tosa Champs: Basket Brawlers

In Tosa, RW Baird was no match for returning champ Monstars as they put a 20 point beat down on the hopefuls in the semi-final game. This set up a rematch from the Winter 2012 semi-final game against Basket Brawlers which saw the Monstars win 49-45. This season would be a little different as the Basket Brawlers relied on their outside shooting hitting 11 of 35 beyond the arc and even hitting a 3 pointer for the win at the buzzer, winning 81-79. Monstars played the inside game and killed the Brawlers on the boards but it just wasn’t enough. Basket Brawler Marty Collins lead all scorers with 23 and the Monstars Logan Frami lead both teams with 12 rebounds.

Fall 2012 GHS Champs – God’s Favor

At Greenfield HS, God’s Favor got out to an early 12 point lead and was able to hold off Hoops Like Jagger’s run at the end and take the title away from the defending champs 66-63. God’s Favor was able to go undefeated and take home their first title having struggled as a team putting up just a 2-5 record last season. Good recruiting has positive results.

Congratulations to both teams and thanks to all the others for playing this season!

Time to gear your team up for End-O-Season (EOS) Weekend. The time where we celebrate the season past and look to the long and dreaded off season, but not until we have a little competition called the Golden Lunchbox Tournament and throw a little party called the EOS Bash.

We are looking for any team that finished 4-4 or better this season. If you find your team name on the list below it means you have been invited or have the potential to be invited to the tournament on Saturday November 3rd. Please email Coach Dan if your team is interested in playing in the tournament and accept your bid. The list will be changing so this isn’t the final version as we have some games to play still and not all teams will take their bid I’m sure.

- EOS Team List -

- Golden Lunchbox Bracket -

Per usual, MUSA is looking for those of you that like to ump and want to help out with the tourney for a few games. MUSA will pick up the tab for lunch, plus a pretty good assortment of beverages and snacks during the whole day. If ya know the rules and love being behind the dish, let me know at dan@musasports.com. It’s important to note that we can schedule ya around any games you might be participating in, so even if you are playing, we can accommodate your schedule. Sorry, ya cant ump your own game! If you are not playing and still want to help out, all the better. Please contact me.

Thursday November 1st

Festivities kick off next Thursday night with the Golden Lunchbox Tournament Selection Show live from O’Briens Pub across from Wick Field on 50th and Vliet. Join the fun as teams select their slots on the bracket for the 25th edition of the coveted Golden Lunchbox Tourney. Pick your bracket for a shot at cold hard cash for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and hobnob with some of the most prolific freak shows in the league. Good times, good times. Balls drop at 8pm!! Get there early for good seats.

If your team isn’t playing in the tournament, but still want to play, it’s always a good idea to show up at the Selection Show. Once brackets are announced, teams tend to need players. Always a good mingling scene for free agents looking to hook-up!

Saturday November 3rd

Golden Lunchbox Tournament

The tourney kicks off in the wee hours of the morning with games typically from 8:15am to early evening at Wick Park. Will the Lunchbox stay in Wisconsin? Rumor has it, Twin Cities is sending about a half dozen teams. Which one of the front-runners will take it this season? Or will there be an up and coming team that will shock the MUSA Nation a la Rosie’s Palms 2005? Check out the games, hang out with your team and plan to picnic on what we hope is a spectacular day filled with upsets and some pretty damn good kickball. Tourney day typically is packed with drama and wild unfettered emotion! Don’t miss the action! For those really ready to get your juices flowing pre-game or maybe your team exited early from the tournament, O’Briens Pub will be opening at 10:00am.

EOS Party

It doesn’t end with the tournament, although some have been known to go home and “accidently” fall asleep, we like to keep the fun going with the EOS Bash. This party is for EVERYONE, so regardless if you played on a Recess team or not, we want to see you!

The party will be hosted at Rounding Third (6317 West Blue Mound Road) and there will be plenty of food and beer for a mere $20 at the door. Help ump some tournament games (or win the Lunchbox) and we can get you in free… trust me I know people. Plus, music by DJ FredX and the usual drunken award ceremony by Da Commish. How can you miss all this? Party gets rollin’ at 7:00pm.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me. dan@musasports.com
