Spring 2017 Golden Lunchbox Kickball Tournament

Posted on June 5, 2017 by Coach Dan in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Kickball
Spring 2017 Golden Lunchbox Kickball Tournament

Well, it all comes down to this for the 2017 Spring kickball season. The Golden Lunchbox kickball tournament marks the end of the regular kickball season, but one team will have its name engraved into MUSA lore for all generations to admire. OK, it might not be that serious, but it’s a fun way to put an nice bow on the end of the season.

WHO’S IN?

This season we’re looking for 16 teams, so all division winners/leaders and second place teams will be granted an auto-bid to the tournament. If a team declines their auto-bid, the bid will be thrown into the bid pool where the next best team from the “team pool” will be able to accept it. So… because there are still a few games to be played yet this week, things are very fluid for some divisions. If you find your team in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place at this time, please start asking your teams if they’ll be accepting a bid if granted one. This list will not be finalized until Thursday night after all games and scores have been reported. Here’s the current list.

If your team is on this list, please let me know if your team is able to play or not. If you are great, if not and your team has an auto-bid, please let me know so I can pass it along to the next team inline for it. Email me at dan@musasports.com and make sure to include your team name.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The kickball tournament will be group play so all teams will get at least 3 games. The top 2 teams in each division will then advance to a single elimination tournament, with winners advancing to the championship game where the winner will be crowned champ and awarded the coveted Golden Lunchbox and some pretty col shirts. Second place will receive the Silver Thermos.

All games will be played at Wick fields, 2, 3, 4 & 5, and the tournament will start at 9:00am and run until about 5:00pm.

Teams will need to supply 1 field ump for assigned games. MUSA will take care of the homeplate umping duties, and during tournament day we’d like a second pair of eyes out there for extra help.

Schedule and groups will be emailed to captains on Friday.

Good luck to all teams!

Re-Build Takes 2015 Fall Basketball Title

Posted on October 15, 2015 by Coach Dan in Milwaukee Basketball

No Rebuilding Needed

Team Run N Gun got out to a quick 4 point lead by draining their first four shots. Three of those shots were 3 pointers. However, The Rebuild had an answer. It was a theme from both teams for almost the entire game. Neither team let the lead get out of hand.  After eight lead changes, Chris Gunderson hit a 3 point shot giving Run N Gun a 6 point lead.  But Arsenio Hall of The Rebuild answered right back with a triple as well. A few minutes later, Gunderson knocked down another 3 ball to increase the lead to six again. But the Rebuild squashed that momentum. Hall finished out the half with a three point shot and then found D.J. Combs open for another 3 which tied the game at 36-36 at the half.

In the second half, Pierre Harris of The Rebuild went to work.  After making only one basket in the first half, Harris got things started with a 3 pointer early in the second.  Hall added a triple to give The Rebuild a 5 point lead.  But Run N Gun thwarted the momentum when Jake Maas drained a three right back.  Harris hit three more 3 pointers for The Rebuild in addition to a few 2 point field goals helping The Rebuild build a 9 point bulge (60-51) with less than ten minutes remaining. It would be prove to be a lead that Run N Gun wouldn’t be able overcome. The Rebuild never lost the lead after that. Run N Gun cut the lead to five a few times, but that is as close as they would come as The Rebuild won by a final of 72-61.

Pierre Harris lead The Rebuild with 23 points of which 20 came in the 2nd half.  J.R. Morris added 14 points and Arsenio Hall finished with 9.  Run N Gun had 4  double digit scorers. Karlos McMurtry lead the team with 15 points. Ryan Flores added 13 points while Chris Gunderson and Jon Krumree dropped in 12 points each.

2015-16 Dodgeball Series at Sky Zone

Posted on October 15, 2015 by Coach Dan in Dodgeball Series

Dodgeball Series is Back

Get ready for a tournament per month for 5 months. Here’s how it works. Each time a team enters a dodgeball tournament, they have a chance at scoring points based on how they finish. Teams do not have to enter every tournament, but the more they enter the better chance they have at scoring points and finishing higher in the overall standings.

Overall Series Standings Coming Soon

Sign your team up today for a chance at some cool prizes from Buffalo Wild Wings, Sky Zone, and MUSA.

$15/player/tournament (sky socks not included)

5 player co-ed teams (3 males & 2 females) but teams can have unlimited rosters

In order for us to track your team’s progress, team names have to stay the same for each tournament, but rosters can change.

Series Scoring

Each team brings 100 series points with them to the tournament. (12 teams = 1200 points)

These Series Points are divided by a percentage among the top 5 teams with the remaining teams getting points based on the bottom team receiving 10 points and adding 15 to each team above them. See below:

1st Place = 30%
2nd Place = 25%
3rd Place = 20%
4th Place = 15%
5th Place = 10%

Last place would get 10 points and add 15 to each team that finishes above them until you get to the 5th place team.

Labor Day Rally-in-the-Sand Dodgeball Wrap-up

Labor Day Rally-in-the-Sand Dodgeball Wrap-up

2015RallyInTheSandSuperDudes_croppedSuperDudes Rally from Behind

The heat of the day couldn’t stop the SuperDudes come from behind victory over Alpha in the 2015 Rally-in-the-Sand dodgeball tournament at Milwaukee Harley-Davidson over Labor Day weekend. It wasn’t easy for them but after getting knocked down into the losers bracket, they rallied past Bottoms Up to earn their rematch against Alpha in the finals of the double elimination style dodgeball event.

First match went down to the wire with Alpha taking the first game of the match and really putting the pressure on. But it was the SuperDudes who got it together and rattled off two consecutive victories and forced a second and final match.

2015RallyInTheSand_BracketThe ‘Dudes seemed to build on that momentum. Even though Alpha had them on the ropes a couple times during the match, they weren’t to be denied as they swept the best 2-of-3 series and ultimately won the Rally-in-the-Sand dodgeball title.

Thanks to all the teams that came out and played. Always a great event during the rally weekend and one that usually gathers a pretty decent crowd. See you next year!

Major Rage-r

Major Rage-r

2015RageintheCage_TBooshThe beautiful chaos that is Rage-in-the-Cage dodgeball was on display Saturday and I guess it’s just easier to recap the day with a list of memorable moments and thoughts. This isn’t just a tournament, it’s an event!

Jar of Farts… by far the best team name, best sportsmanship and I loved yelling out, “Jar of Farts, are you ready?!?!” in front of hundreds of people.

I saw a team eliminate another team in less than 20 seconds. I’m not going to name names. The next time I had to ask them twice if they were ready. They did end up taking 2 of 3 so they finally woke up.

There was a 7-foot giant from Schoolyard with a cannon for an arm. Teams quickly figured out once they eliminated him, the rest of the muscle just wasn’t strong enough. Those dudes are big.

11535897_934895686531930_3442198599695570299_nAll of the spectators that stand in the Cage by me while the matches are going on make me laugh. It’s definitely an “At your own risk” situation. One guy was standing there with a full beer and I don’t know who threw that ball that crushed his plastic cup and soaked him, but “thank you”. That was hilarious. The spectator even just gave a casual nod and said “good one” and proceeded to grab another beer and stand in the same spot. Awesome.

Lucid and Mi-Keys should talk next time before the tournament about t-shirt colors. Too much teal.

There was also the girl who complained to me all tournament about the over-the-center line rule. Not sure why she hated me so much. I saw her stumble and slide head first with her whole body across the center line. I’m glad she was OK, but karma sometimes can trip you up.

This was by far the most watched tournament yet. I don’t feel like doing the math, but there were 3 or 4 people deep all around the fence pretty much the whole day and even more for the championship. Great to see the balcony at Hotel Foster used as second level seating for those that wanted a birds-eye view.

The championship match had everything; spinning 360 throws, clutch catches, knee pads, staredowns, crowd participation, and unfortunately, controversy. It’s never my intention to have an influence on the game because of a blown call, but sometimes it happens. I just hope the drinks I bought afterwards helped ease some of the pain. Regardless, it was a fun, hard fought battle between the SuperDudes from Milwaukee, versus TC Boosh, a team comprised of players from the Twin Cities and Chicago areas. TC Boosh previously beat the SuperDudes in the semi-final round, so the ‘Dudes were coming up from the losers bracket in the double elimination style tournament. Great back and forth action all match but it was TC Boosh that rattled off 2 straight victories after dropping the first game to defeat the SuperDudes 2 out of 3 for the championship.

Congrats and thanks to all the teams that participated this year. I’m already looking forward to next year’s battle. A special thanks to all the SuperDudes and others for helping me set up and tear down the fencing.

I apologize to the Summer Soulstice organizers that we went over our allotted time, but judging by how many people were engaged, watching, chanting, and cheering during the tournament, we were just giving the people what they wanted. Pure entertainment.

Until next year Summer Soulstice.

Vandelay Domin8 Spring Lunchbox

Vandelay Domin8 Spring Lunchbox

2015SpringVandelayIndustriesVandelay Industries once again runs the table at the Golden Lunchbox Kickball Tournament to claim their 8th title in franchise history. They defeated another MUSA kickball powerhouse, SuperDudes, 5-0 in the final who were looking for their 6 Lunchbox title. The championship game wasn’t really close, as the ‘Dudes were only able to muster a few scoring opportunities which all feel short. In the end Vandelay just dominated the day scoring 59 total runs and only giving up 5 in 5 total games on the day. That includes a 27-0 pounding of Friends With Benefits and 20-1 thrashing over tournament newcomer Kick Astley. Congrats goes to VI and for all the teams that participated in the first ever double elimination Golden Lunchbox Kickball Tournament.

I want to send out a special thanks to Andy Lunzer from the Twin Cities MUSA kickball league for making the trek down and helping ump all day. I also want to thanks to all the volunteer umps who came through on the day and helped make the tournament run smoother. It wasn’t without it’s bumps, but I think the format worked and overall most teams enjoyed the extra game(s) and spending the day hanging out at the park a little longer, even if the weather was a bit foggy to start the morning.

If you’re interested in checking out the tournament shook out, you can view the completed bracket here.

Can’t wait to do it again next Spring!

Shackfitness wins “punch-counterpunch battle” to take their first title

Shackfitness wins “punch-counterpunch battle” to take their first title

Basketball14For the first ten minutes of the game, Shackfitness and Skyzone played like two boxers standing toe to toe exchanging blows.  There were four ties, nine lead changes, and neither team led by more than 3 points. As soon as Shackfitness got out to a 7 point lead with 8 minutes to go in the half, Mike Tapp drained a 3 point shot to keep things close. Tapp then buried another 3  point shot at the buzzer to tie things up at the half 27-27.

The second half started just like the first. Down by one, Shackfitness took a time-out with 12:43 left in the game.  That’s when the 3 point shots started to drop. Terrial Buycks knocked down two triples in a two minute span forcing SkyZone to call a time-out of their own.  However, Shackfitness came out of that time-out with another 3 point play.

MUSA basketball champion

2015 Spring Basketball Champs – Shackfitness

This time it was Andrew Brown getting fouled during a drive to the basket. The shot counted and Brown made his free throw to give Shackfitness a 7 point lead.  After adding another basket and two free throws, SkyZone found themselves down by 11.  That’s when Herb Coulthurst, coming off the bench after suffering an ankle injury in the first half, buried a three point shot from the right wing to try to spark a run for SkyZone. But Bryan Epps of Shackfitness answered right back with consecutive three point bombs making the score 59-45 extending the Shackfitness lead to 14 with 5 minutes left to play. It was too large of a lead for SkyZone to overcome as Shackfitness hit the majority of their free throws down the stretch to hold off a SkyZone team that refused to give up.

Shackfitness won their first session title with a hard fought 73-67 victory.  Bryan Epps led Shackfitness with 23 points (3/6 3PT,  4/6 2PT, 6/7 FT.)   Mike Tapp and Sean Sura scored 20 points each for SkyZone.

2015_3pt_JamisonMontgomeryCongratulations goes to Jamison Montgomery from Fresh Habits for winning MUSA’s 3-point contest. Before the excitement of the championship game five shooters from the league battled it out for for the title and it was Jamison who got top billing. He barely made it out of the first round. Needing 5 points heading into the last rack of balls, Jamison was able to drain all 5 balls including the last bonus ball giving him 15 points total points just edging out the 14 Corey Smith put up. He them rattled off 20 in the next round boosting him into the championship round where he put up another 20 and blowing past runner-up Antoine Roby.

Basketball08WEEK 5 RECAP

The early game wasn’t without drama. Sky Zone needed a win against Big Shots to give them a chance at the playoffs, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Big Shots was able to keep last season’s runner-up out of the playoffs beating them by the slimmest of margins, 61-60. The win earned Big Shots a #3 seed in the playoffs.

Even though Young Bucks had a spot in the playoffs already sewn-up, the 78-71 loss to Team Hustle was still a surprise. Team Hustle hadn’t won a game all season until last Sunday and maybe this is just the confidence they need heading into the Winter session.

Showtime didn’t let up just because they had the #1 seed in the playoffs. Keeping their momentum going they battled their way to a 75-69 victory over the #4 seed Purple Rain. This sets up the rematch next week for the semi-finals.

PLAYOFF LOOK AHEAD

Sunday marks the start of the 2014 MUSA Basketball Fall II playoffs with the #1 seed Showtime going against the #4 seed Purple Rain. These teams just faced each other last week and Showtime won by 6. Purple Rain has their work cut out for them, but they’ll need to contain Showtime’s Big-3 of Barfield, Doughty, and Williams.
Showtime -8

In the 2nd semi-final of the night we see #2 seed Young Bucks going against #3 Big Shots. Both teams are 3-2 but Young Bucks defeated Big Shots by 21 in their previous meeting and it’s going to take a perfect game by Big Shots if they want to get to the championship.
Young Bucks -12

Next Week’s Schedule
6:00pm Sky Zone vs Team Hustle
7:00pm Showtime vs. Purple Rain
8:00pm Young Bucks vs. Big Shots

See you at the gym.

MUSA United just rolled over last place team Los Guerreros by the score of 17-3 and it really wasn’t even that close. Having the game in hand early, the United bunch took some unnecessary risks by bringing the goalie forward on some set pieces which led to some breakaway goals for the opposing side, but in the end it was all Red.

Next week will be a big challenge for the United bunch as they take on Piracy who is top of the table and have yet to see defeat. Game time is 9:00pm on court 1.
