It’s been a few years but finally MUSA Dodgeball was back at Bradford Beach for the 2013 installment of the Beach Jam. It didn’t matter if the sand was scorching hot, the weather couldn’t have been better and the teams were ready to do battle inside one of the greatest dodgeball arena’s I have ever seen thanks to the hardworking people at the beach.
In the first round of group play The People’s Elbow easily dispatched Hit It & Forget It 3 games to 0 for the complete dodgeball sweep and setting the tone for the rest of the tournament that they were the team to beat. Coming off a 4th place finish in the Winter Dodgeball league, Who’s Counting was looking to take advantage of new comers the Bradford Beach Bums and advantage they got, sweeping the Bums 3 games to none including a first round game that lasted only 1 minute 4 seconds. At that point you knew the Bums were playing for pride the rest of the day and winding up in 4th after pool play. Hit It & Forget It at times played like a team to contend with but just too inconsistent to put any real kind of real threat together so they ended pool play in the #3 spot.
The tournament had some great action including some last man standing heroics by an unknown Beach Bum who made a timely catch with time winding down to grab one of their only 2 wins of the day. It’s not easy being the 1 against 8. Also, captain Andy Schalk of Who’s Counting was always in the mood for some spectacular diving catches to save his team out of the clutches of defeat and launch them into the 2nd seed for the elimination round. In the end though, The People’s Elbow was just too much for anyone to handle as they defeated Who’s Counting 2 out of 3 in the championship and sealing their names in MUSA Dodgeball lore.
They weren’t flashy, just consistent and tough to beat… kind of like the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. Congrats guys and gals on a great tournament and thank you to everyone that participated and helped with the tournament, it truly is a unique and special venue.
If you missed this the first installment of the Beach Cup, mark your calendars as we are going back to the beach for part duex September 21st! Get your teams ready as registration will open Monday August 26th.
