Apparently 2 is better than 1

Apparently 2 is better than 1

The ol’ saying goes, “Two is better than one”, and normally that is true. In the sports World however, when a team is ranked #1 it usually means they’re better than the rest of the league. Especially, after the #2 team has already played the game previously and should be tired. I don’t think that has quite sunk into the heads of the the #2 teams at St Bernard’s and Greenfield High School for the Winter 2012 MUSA Basketball leagues.

Winter 2012 Champs: Monstars (St Bernard's)

Winter 2012 Champs: CT's Team (GHS)

Coming off a championship campaign in the previous season, NARB sat once again at the head of the table and ready to take on the winner of Monstars and the Unselfish Ballers in the evenings semi-final game. Although the Unselfish Ballers lived up to their name and led the game with 10 assists, they were just over matched with the consistency play of the Monstars’ even scoring line, having 3 players score in double digits and led by Quinten Barfield and Joe Williams with 13pts each. The Monstars got out to a 10 point halftime lead and even though the Unselfish Ballers stuck with the Monstars in the second half, they just couldn’t catch up and ended up losing 59-49 when it was all said and done.
That set up the rematch from the regular season which saw NARB win by 3 in a very highly contested contest. The Monstars were warmed up and ready to go and jumped out to a 9 point lead, 45-36. led by high scorer Courtney Davis with 29 points, the Monstars shot 66.7% from the field and adding 13-22 behind the 3 point arc for a 59.1 shooting percentage. NARB did make a valiant effort in the second half and cut the lead to 6, but that was about it, ending in a 80-74 victory for the Monstars and seeing them raise the championship for the Winter 2012 MUSA Basketball league.
Greenfield High School was the next setting for another sweet underdog run. CT’s Team and Brass Monkey were slated for the semi-final game while #1 seed You’re My Boy Blue wanted in the wings for the winner. Missing two of their star players, CT’s team looked sharp and just out shot Brass Monkey the whole game. Brass Monkey did manage to keep it close for awhile but the combination of CT’s good defense and their ability to hit clutch free-throws toward the end of the game put Brass Monkey to bed 39-26.
With only 6 guys to their roster, CT’s Team was tired, ready to collapse and was trying to get their breath when the final game started and it showed as You’re My Boy Blue got out to an early lead. Not to be discouraged, CT’s Team fought back early in the 1st half and was leading by the time the horn sounded. They showed no signs of slowing down and dominated the 2nd half with shaky shooting by the #1 seed You’re My Boy Blue. In the end Blue tried the fouling game but when a team keeps hitting their freethrows and the other team can’t hit anything on the other end, the game gets out of control and finally Blue threw in the towel being defeated 45-30. The game was actually a lot closer then the scored indicates.
Congrats to Monstars and CT’s Team for being league champions.

Final Night Does Not Disappoint

Final Night Does Not Disappoint

After 7 hard battled weeks of throwing, dodging, and catching it came down to the final week for more then just the top 2 teams in the 2012 Winter dodgeball league. It may have been miles between the top teams and the bottom teams, but you couldn’t tell that to any of the teams involved because there were only 2 points seperating 1st & 2nd and 3rd & 4th.

Mad Dog Saloon and BBC Ballers kicked off the evening with a classic best of three that went down to the rubber match in which Mad Dog Saloon took the point putting them up 3 points in the standings and sealing their 3rd place finish. That didn’t discourage the BBC Ballers though as they came right back and won the next point by sweeping the Mad Dog Saloon 2-0, but in the end the Mad Doggers seemed too much to handle as they downed the Ballers in their final match of the evening.

In the main event we saw #1 seed The Bubbler trying to hold off #2 Love Sick For Klug for the overall dodgeball title. The first epic battle had both teams down to the final player several times only to bounce back with significant and game changing catches. It’s hard to put into words the spectacular play by both sides and at the end of the first match Love Sick For Klug was one step closer to catching The Bubbler by downing the overall standings leader 2-1 and gaining a point back. Still with their backs against the wall, Love Sick For Klug kept the momentum going and swept the leader 2-0 in the second match to pull even and setting up a finale for the title. It was much closer then the 2-0 sweep, but The Bubbler did prevail and ended up holding off a great comeback from a worthy opponent. Both teams were so evenly matched that at any point it could have gone either way and what a way to end a fantastic season.

Congratulations to The Bubbler and great job by all the teams and thanks for playing this season. I hope to have many more seasons filled with just as much excitement and great play. Also, a special thanks to everyone who helped out with getting the tape off the floor. I hope we see everyone back next time!
